---------------------- LANtronix ---------------------- Modem Redirector for ---------------------- Windows 95/NT ---------------------- Software Release Notes ---------------------- Version 1.2/6 November 30, 1999 Copyright (c) 1999, Lantronix This document describes the Lantronix Modem Redirector for Windows 95/NT software release. This document is divided into the following sections: o New Features o Requirements to run the redirector. o Packages that have been tested against the redirector. - Windows 95 - Windows NT o Fax modem table New Features ============ o No new features since 1.2/5. Resolved Problems ================= o Simultaneous redirected ports did not work correctly in 1.2/5. Known Problems ============== Applications that open a comm port more than once will not work. This includes packages such as Procomm that have separate data and fax channels. See the application notes below. Certain modems profiles will disconnect the redirector session when the modem init string is sent. If you notice that the redirector connects and then disconnects right away then use the Modem Control Panel to change your modem profile to one of the Standard modem types. This tells Windows to send a generic init string which does not override the LRS init string. Faxing works with fax class 2 only and the modems noted below. Requirements ============ The following things are required to run the redirector: 1. A Lantronix LRS running firmware version B1.3/302 or higher or a Lantronix terminal server running B3.5/901 or higher. Follow the directions in the reference manual for adding a dial-out service to the LRS. For redirection over IP, be sure to use the TCPPORT option to specify a socket number for the service. This will be in the 4xxx range. For redirection over IP to a MSS1 the serial port is always 3001, and over IPX the serial port name is MSS_xxxxxx_S1 where xxxxxx is the last 6 characters of the unit's ethernet address in hexadecimal. 2. A PC running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 3.51 or NT 4.0 running on an IP and/or IPX network. The IP and/or IPX stacks need to be configured properly. Windows 95 Application Notes ============================ The following packages have been tested against the Windows 95 redirector: 32-bit applications ------------------- o FedEx Ship 2.1 Connects to the service, dials the modem, then locks up. o Netmanage ChameleonNFS Client 5.0 This program replaces Microsoft's wsock32.dll with a version that doesn't support IPX/SPX. If this client is installed on your PC the redirector will not work with IPX. You must use IP. o Compuserve 3.0.1 for Windows 95 Has problems. Maybe conflicts with ethernet IP stack and/or Winsock? o pcAnywhere32 Works o Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking Works. o HyperTerminal (comes with Windows 95) Works o Microsoft Fax (see modem chart below) Requires fax class 2: Find out if you modem supports fax class 2: - AT+FCLASS=? will give you a comma-separated list of supported fax classes, like 0,1,2 - The '2' indicated fax class 2. - 2.0 is not the same as fax class 2. If your modem doesn't support fax class 2 then it won't work with the redirector. Change your fax modem to use Class 2 fax: 1. Control Panel -> Mail and Fax 2. Select Microsoft Fax 3. Properties -> Modem 4. Select the modem associated with the redirected port 5. Properties -> Advanced 6. Check "Use Class 2 if available" o Delrina Winfax Pro 8.0 for Windows 95 (see modem chart below) Need to use TAPI and fax class 2: 1. Within the application go to Setup -> Modems. 2. Select the modem and go to Properties. 3. Set the Communications port to TAPI 4. Set the Fax/modem type to Class 2 o Qmodem Pro for Windows 95 Works o Reachout 6.0 for Windows 95 Have to enable TAPI option. Unstable connecting and disconnecting due to port cycling. Seems to work better with only one service in the redirected services list. o Reachout 7.0 for Windows 95 Works, but has same connect/disconnect cycling problem as 6.0 version, so not always reliable. o HotFax MessageCenter for Windows 95 Sending faxes works. Data terminal works. 16-bit applications ------------------- o 16-bit Windows terminal Go to Settings->Communications and set Flow Control to Hardware. Go to Settings->Modem Commands and delete the Originate string. (The LRS correctly initializes the modem) o Trio DataFAX Lite 4.1 Wouldn't install under Windows 95. o CompuServe WinCIM 2.0.1 Works o America Online 3.0 Works o SoftNet FaxWorks 3.0 Couldn't get it to recognize a non-local modem. o ComIt Lite for Windows 1.17 Wouldn't install under Windows 95. o Reachout 5.0 Doesn't wait for an "OK" response from the modem between the init string and the dial string. Modem won't dial. o Reachout 6.0 for DOS/Windows Works, but this package has other problems not related to the redirector. Have to check the telephony option. o HyperACCESS Lite (similar to HyperTerminal, also by Hillgraeve) Haven't tested yet. o Hayes Smartcom for Windows 1.1A Works fairly well. o Hayes Smartcom for Windows LE 1.0B Connects and then immediately disconnects. o Procomm Plus 2.1 for Windows Data connection will work, but can't have both data and fax connections. Fax connection must be set to "None." DOS Applications ---------------- The redirector can be used with DOS applications under Windows 95 by using TurboCom VIP from Pacific CommWare. This package intercepts all COM port traffic from DOS and sends it to the redirector. Currently the only DOS apps that have been tested in this manner are Kermit and Procomm Plus for DOS, but other applications should work. If you click on "Retry" it will work correctly. Fax modem table =============== The following fax modems have been tested against the redirector and Delrina WinFax PRO 8.0 and Microsoft Fax for Windows 95: Fax Modems that don't support Class 2 ------------------------------------- Intel SatisFAXtion Modem/400e PCFM6501 Hayes Smartmodem OPTIMA 288 USR Sportster 28.8, 33.6, 56K (supports 2.0, not 2) USR Courier V.Everything (supports 2.0, not 2) Table of Fax Class 2 modems which have been tested (Y = works, N = doesn't) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- MSFax Delrina WinFax PRO 8.0 ----- ---------------------- SupraFax Modem 28.8 Y Y Bocamodem V.34 Y Y *4 BestData Smart One 2834FX Y Y *1 Zoom V.34 Y Y *1 ZyXEL U-1496E Plus V.32b/FAX/VOICE Y Y *2 MultiTech MultiModem MT2834 Y Y *2 PPI 28.8 v1.53 N Y Digicom Scout 28834e N Y AT&T DataPort 28.8 N N NetComm Automodem E7F Y *3 ? Banksia PRO 34 Y *3 ? Zoom Faxmodem 56KX dial modem V.90 ? Y *5 *1 You must delete the &c1 from the Delrina's modem init string for this modem. *2 At the end of the fax transmition Delrina reports a "cannot send data to hardware" message even though the fax was sent successfully. *3 These are apparently Australian modems that are reported by users to work. They have not been tested in-house. *4 It's been reported that Boca no longer supports fax class 2 in any of their modems, so don't expect faxing to work if you buy a new one. *5 This has been reported in from the field as "working great" but has not been tested first-hand. Caveat emptor.
